Is black mold causing our symptoms and safe to clean?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. Since the weather got really humid a few weeks ago, my husband and I have both had a constant stuffy nose and itchy eyes that clear up when we're at work. Could this mold be the cause of our symptoms, and is it safe to clean it ourselves with bleach or do we need to call a professional company here in Dubai?

The black mold in your closet is very likely causing your symptoms, especially given that they improve when you leave the house. The recent high humidity is a classic trigger for mold growth in Dubai. This type of confined, poorly ventilated space behind stored items is a common problem in villas here, as the air conditioning often doesn't circulate well enough to keep these areas dry.

Cleaning a small patch yourself can be done, but bleach is not recommended. It only removes surface discoloration and does not kill the root structure of the mold. More importantly, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the problem. For a patch smaller than one square meter, use a dedicated mold cleaner or a vinegar solution, scrubbing gently. Always wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection.

However, the crucial step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In a closet, this is often condensation from an exterior wall or a small, unnoticed leak. Simply cleaning without fixing the moisture will guarantee its return within weeks.

Given your persistent symptoms and the villa's age, a professional inspection is advisable. They can use a moisture meter to find the exact source of the water intrusion and assess if there is hidden growth within the wall cavity, which is common here. For a confirmed, ongoing issue, remediation is the only permanent solution.
