Is black mold dangerous and how to remove it completely?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and their allergies are going crazy. I finally pulled out their wooden toy chest from the corner of their bedroom in our Jumeirah villa and found a patch of black, fuzzy mold covering the entire back where it was against the wall. We had that minor leak during the heavy dew last month and I guess the humidity never left. Is this black mold dangerous and how do I make sure it’s completely gone so it doesn’t affect their health again?

Black mold is a broad term for several species, some of which can produce mycotoxins and are more problematic than common household mold. The primary health risk is respiratory irritation—persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergies are very common symptoms, especially in children. For immunocompromised individuals, the risk is higher.
Given the symptoms you described and the visible growth on a porous material like wood, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. The high humidity in Dubai, especially after a leak, means moisture can wick into the wall itself, creating a hidden reservoir for mold you cannot see behind the toy chest. Simply cleaning the visible surface is rarely sufficient. For complete remediation, the affected wooden toy chest may be difficult to salvage and disposal is often the safest option. The wall behind it must be inspected for moisture and properly dried using industrial equipment to prevent immediate regrowth. The area should then be cleaned with antimicrobial solutions. DIY attempts often spread spores and fail to address the root moisture problem. To ensure it is completely gone and for your peace of mind, post-remediation verification testing is key. This involves an independent lab analysis of air and surface samples to confirm spore counts have returned to normal indoor levels. This is the only way to verify the cleanup was successful and your children's environment is healthy. |
