Is black mold dangerous and need a doctor?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It must have been there a while, but I only saw it today while doing a deep clean. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for months, and now I'm worried it's connected. **Is this type of mold dangerous, and should we see a doctor or just get it cleaned immediately?**

The black patch you've found is likely Aspergillus niger, a common mold in Dubai due to our high humidity and constant AC use, which creates condensation. While not the infamous "toxic black mold" (Stachybotrys), it can still cause significant health issues, especially in a bedroom where you're exposed for hours.

Your wife's symptoms—chronic stuffy nose and headaches—are classic reactions to mold exposure for sensitive individuals. The connection is very plausible. You should absolutely see a doctor to discuss these symptoms; they can determine if an allergy test or treatment is needed.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing it will release a large number of spores into your bedroom's air. In the UAE, this requires a professional inspection and remediation. A proper inspection will identify the moisture source (likely a cold bridge in the wall or AC condensation issue) and the mold species through lab analysis. Remediation involves containment, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to ensure it doesn't return. Focus on fixing the underlying moisture problem first, as cleaning without doing so is only a temporary solution.
