Is black mold dangerous and should I hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an interior wall. It's been extra humid lately and the room always feels a bit damp. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches for the past month. How dangerous is this type of mold and should we get a professional to test it, or can I just clean it with bleach myself?

Black mold in Dubai's climate is a legitimate health concern, especially with the symptoms you've described. The consistent high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold growth, particularly on interior walls where condensation can form. The damp feeling and recent stuffy noses and headaches are strong indicators that this mold is already affecting your indoor air quality.

While not all black molds are the highly toxic Stachybotrys, many species commonly found here can cause the exact reactions your wife is experiencing. Bleach is not recommended; it only removes the surface discoloration and leaves the deeper mold roots intact. It also fails to address the underlying moisture problem, so the mold will almost certainly return. More importantly, cleaning it yourself can aerosolize the spores, potentially making the air quality worse.

For a situation like this—visible growth, a persistent moisture source, and correlating health symptoms—a professional inspection is strongly advised. They will identify the exact species through lab analysis, which is crucial for understanding the risk level, and locate the source of the moisture, which is the only way to prevent recurrence. In the UAE, proper remediation follows standards like the IICRC S520, which focuses on containment and removal, not just surface cleaning. Addressing the root cause is essential for your family's health in this environment.
