Is black mold dangerous for kids? Need pro or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I just found patches of black mold behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’re in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m worried the recent humidity made it worse. Is this something I need to call a professional to deal with immediately, or can I handle it myself with bleach this weekend?

Black mold exposure can be particularly problematic for children, whose respiratory systems are still developing, often exacerbating coughing, allergies, and asthma. The presence of visible patches behind furniture, combined with your children's symptoms, strongly suggests a professional inspection is warranted.

In Dubai's climate, high humidity and year-round AC use create ideal conditions for mold to thrive, especially in older buildings where condensation and hidden leaks are common. A patch behind a wardrobe often indicates a larger, hidden problem within the wall cavity. DIY cleaning with bleach is a surface-level fix; it may temporarily remove the visible stain but does not address the root moisture source or the microscopic spores, and the bleach itself can irritate airways.

For a situation involving health symptoms and a suspected larger infestation, a professional assessment is advised. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the source and can take air or surface samples for lab analysis to confirm the mold type and concentration. Remediation involves containing the area, safely removing contaminated materials, and using HEPA filtration to capture spores, not just wipe them around. After the source is fixed and the area is clean, a post-remediation verification test is the only way to confirm the environment is safe.
