Is black mold from AC dangerous for kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks now and we can't figure out why. I was cleaning behind the wardrobe in our bedroom and found a patch of black mold on the wall, probably from the AC unit's condensation. We live in a villa in Mirdif and the room always feels a bit damp. Is this type of mold dangerous and can I clean it myself with bleach, or do I need to call a professional?

Based on your description, the situation you're describing is a serious health concern that requires immediate professional attention. The black mold you found, likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species, is extremely dangerous, especially for children. The persistent cough your kids have is a classic symptom of mold spore inhalation, which can lead to chronic respiratory issues, allergic reactions, and other health problems.

In the UAE's humid climate, particularly in areas like Mirdif where villas can trap moisture, AC condensation leaks are a primary cause of this toxic mold growth. Using bleach is a common DIY mistake; it is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall as it only bleaches the surface color and does not kill the root structure. It can also agitate the spores, releasing more into the air and worsening the air quality and your children's symptoms.

This is not a situation for DIY. UAE regulations and best practices for mold remediation require professional containment, advanced air scrubbing (HEPA filtration), and antimicrobial treatment to safely remove the biomass and neutralize the spores. A certified inspector must also identify and rectify the source of the moisture—in this case, the AC condensation leak—to prevent immediate regrowth.

For the safety of your family, I strongly advise against cleaning it yourself. You need a professional inspection and remediation plan. Please call our team immediately at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment. We can determine the exact species and the extent of the contamination to ensure it is removed safely and permanently.
