Is black mold from AC dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from this black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's on the corner of the wall that faces the outside, and we've been running the AC non-stop for months. I'm worried it's been there since the humidity spiked a couple of months ago. What's the most effective way to remove this safely and is this something I should handle myself or call a professional for?

Based on your description, the situation you've described presents a significant health risk and requires immediate professional attention. The black mold you've found behind the wardrobe is highly likely to be Stachybotrys chartarum, commonly referred to as toxic black mold. This type of mold produces mycotoxins that are particularly dangerous when inhaled, especially for children whose respiratory systems are still developing. The persistent coughing you've observed is a classic symptom of mold spore exposure.
The location on an exterior wall, combined with non-stop AC usage, points to a classic Dubai-specific issue: condensation. The extreme humidity outside meets the cold interior wall surface cooled by the AC, creating a constant source of moisture perfect for mold growth inside the wall cavity. This is not a surface-level issue; the mold growth within the wall is likely far more extensive than what is visible. Do not attempt to remove this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will aerosolize a massive amount of spores and mycotoxins throughout your home, drastically increasing your family's exposure. Effective remediation requires industrial-grade HEPA filtration units to create negative air pressure, contain the area, and safely remove all contaminated materials. For the safety of your children, I strongly recommend you cease using that AC unit in the bedroom and contact a certified professional immediately for an inspection and remediation plan.
