Is black mold from AC leak a DIY fix?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit and now there's a spreading black patch on the wall behind the wardrobe. I tried wiping it with bleach but it came back darker within a week, and the room has this weird damp smell. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional company to deal with it?

Based on your description of a recurring black patch and a persistent damp odor, this is highly likely a significant black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) infestation, not a simple surface issue. The Dubai climate, with its extreme humidity and year-round reliance on AC systems, creates a perfect breeding ground for mold, especially when a leak provides constant moisture. The fact that it returned darker after a bleach wipe is a critical indicator; bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall as it only bleaches the surface pigments without addressing the root mycelium growth deep within.

Attempting a stronger DIY cleaner is strongly discouraged. Agitating the mold can release a high concentration of toxic mycotoxins and spores into your bedroom air, posing serious health risks. Furthermore, proper remediation requires more than cleaning; the water-damaged section of the wall behind the wardrobe likely needs to be removed and replaced to eliminate the moisture source and the deeply embedded mold colony.

For a situation like this, a professional inspection and remediation are absolutely necessary. We are mandated by Dubai Municipality guidelines to handle such cases with specific containment procedures, industrial-grade HEPA filtration scrubbers, and antimicrobial treatments to ensure the mold is safely and completely eradicated, protecting both the property and the health of its occupants.
