Is black mold from AC leak an urgent health risk?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom closet seems to be leaking a little, and now we’ve found a patch of black mold on the back wall behind the clothes. It’s been like this for maybe two weeks and my husband has been complaining of a stuffy nose and headaches every morning. How urgently do we need to get a professional mold remediation company in, and is it safe for us to sleep in that room tonight?

Based on the symptoms you've described and the presence of black mold from an AC leak, this situation should be considered an urgent health risk and addressed immediately. The persistent stuffy nose and headaches your husband is experiencing are classic indicators of exposure to mold spores and mycotoxins, which are released into the air as the colony grows. The confined space of a closet, combined with the constant airflow from the AC unit, is actively circulating these contaminants into your bedroom's air.

In the UAE's climate, where high humidity and year-round AC use are the norm, an active water leak creates a perfect breeding ground for mold. The species commonly referred to as "black mold" (often Stachybotrys chartarum) is particularly concerning due to its potential to produce harmful mycotoxins. Prolonged exposure can escalate symptoms from allergic reactions to more severe respiratory issues.

It is not advisable to sleep in that room tonight. Continued exposure, especially over several hours of sleep, will exacerbate symptoms. You should cease using the AC in that unit, isolate the area if possible, and relocate until a professional assessment can be made.

As a certified mold inspector, I strongly recommend you do not attempt to remove this yourself. Disturbing the colony without proper containment protocols will cause a massive release of spores. This requires professional mold remediation following strict guidelines.
