Is black mold from AC leak urgent in Dubai humidity?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water into the closet where the unit is housed. I wiped it up a couple of days ago but didn't think much of it. Today I pulled out some winter jackets stored in there and found a few small patches of black mold on the wall behind them and a really strong, damp smell.
Given the humidity here, how urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on your description of a water leak from the AC unit in Jumeirah Village Circle, visible black mold patches, and a strong damp smell, I would classify this as a situation requiring urgent professional attention. The high humidity levels in Dubai, often exceeding 90%, create a perfect environment for rapid mold proliferation. What you see on the surface is often just a fraction of the colonization, which can spread within the wall cavity and the AC system itself.
Using bleach is strongly discouraged. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface mold without killing the roots. More critically, it introduces excessive moisture, which the mold will use to regrow even stronger. Bleach can also release harmful chlorinated compounds into the air when it interacts with organic material. Under Dubai Municipality regulations, addressing the source of the moisture is the first and most critical step. A professional inspection is essential to identify the exact cause of the AC condensate leak—be it a clogged drain line, faulty installation, or insufficient insulation—and rectify it. Following this, a certified remediation protocol, which includes containment, HEPA filtration, and the application of EPA-approved antimicrobial agents, is necessary to safely remove the contamination and prevent recurrence. Given the accelerated growth rate in our climate, delaying action risks significant property damage and potential health issues from prolonged spore exposure.
