Is black mold from AC making us sick? Urgent?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the corner of our master bedroom closet, and it's spreading onto some of our shoes. The AC unit is on the other side of that wall. My wife has had a persistent stuffy nose and a cough that won't go away for the last month. How urgently do we need to get a professional to deal with this, and should we be staying out of the room entirely in the meantime?

The black spots and your wife's symptoms are strongly linked, and this requires prompt attention. In Dubai's climate, persistent AC use creates constant condensation, providing the ideal environment for mold growth behind walls and in ducts. The most common type, Cladosporium, often appears black and is a known respiratory irritant.
You should treat this as urgent. For your wife's health, it's best to stay out of the room and keep the door closed until it's inspected. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can release a high concentration of spores into the air, potentially worsening symptoms. The location suggests a hidden moisture source, likely a condensate drain leak or insulation issue within the AC system that requires professional diagnosis. A proper inspection will identify the mold species and the root cause of the moisture. Remediation involves fixing the water issue, containing the area to prevent cross-contamination, and removing the mold with HEPA filtration. Without addressing the source, it will simply return. For health and safety, this is a job for certified professionals who can provide verifiable before-and-after lab results to confirm the environment is safe. |
