Is black mold from AC urgent for health?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been making a weird damp smell for the last couple of weeks, and I just pulled back the corner of the carpet near the vent and found a patch of black mold on the concrete underneath. We’ve had the AC running 24/7 with all the humidity. How urgent is it that I get this professionally treated, and could this be affecting our health already?

Yes, this is a situation that requires prompt professional attention. The damp smell and visible black mold growth under the carpet indicate a significant condensation or moisture issue, which is common with year-round AC use in Dubai's humidity.

The health impact depends on the mold species, but any persistent mold growth in a bedroom can affect air quality. It commonly causes allergy-like symptoms—congestion, sneezing, irritated eyes, or worsening asthma. For individuals with respiratory conditions or weakened immune systems, the risk is higher. If your household has been experiencing unexplained headaches, fatigue, or sinus issues, the mold could be a contributing factor.

The urgency stems from the hidden nature of the problem. What you see under the carpet is likely just a small part of the growth. Mold can spread within the AC ductwork, inside the unit, and under flooring. Simply cleaning the visible spot won't address the source.

A professional inspection is needed to identify the moisture source—often a clogged condensate drain line, poor insulation, or a leak—and assess the full extent of contamination. Remediation involves fixing the water issue, containing the area to prevent spores from spreading during cleaning, and properly removing the contaminated materials. For verification, a company with its own microbiology lab can test to identify the mold type and confirm the environment is safe after remediation.
