Is black mold from humidity dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We’ve lived in this Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed it, probably from the humidity. My youngest has had a runny nose for a week that won't go away. How dangerous is this, and should I get a professional mold inspection or can I clean it myself with bleach?

Black mold from humidity can indeed be a health concern, especially for children. The dark, discolored patches are likely Stachybotrys, a type of mold that thrives in the persistent humidity common in Dubai villas. It produces mycotoxins that can cause respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, and runny noses, which aligns with the symptoms you're describing in your kids.
The real danger is not just the visible spot but the potential for a larger colony hidden behind the wardrobe or inside the wall, which you cannot effectively address with a surface clean. Bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water and only bleaches the mold on non-porous surfaces while potentially releasing more spores into the air. It does not kill the root structure on porous materials like drywall or wood. Given the symptoms and the location, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the moisture source and the full extent of the growth. The goal is to fix the humidity issue—often condensation from AC ducts or a leak—to prevent it from returning. For confirmation, a lab analysis of a tape lift sample can identify the species and the concentration of spores in your bedroom's air, providing a clear picture of the risk to your family's health. |
