Is black mold in AC vents causing our cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past month and my own allergies are going crazy, and I think it's because of the black stuff growing around the edges of our AC vents in the living room. We've lived in this Jumeirah apartment for 2 years and just noticed it spreading after the recent humidity. Is this black mold and could it really be causing these health issues?

Yes, black mold in AC vents can absolutely cause persistent coughing and worsened allergies, especially in Dubai's humid climate where condensation inside AC units creates ideal conditions for growth. The dark substance around your vents is very likely microbial growth, and given your family's symptoms, it should be treated as a potential health concern.

The constant recirculation of air through the AC means spores from that growth are being distributed throughout your living space, directly irritating your respiratory systems. Infants and those with existing allergies or asthma are particularly susceptible. While not all black-colored mold is the notorious Stachybotrys, many common species like Cladosporium or Aspergillus can trigger these exact reactions.

In the UAE, this is a frequent issue, especially in older buildings or units where drainage pans are clogged or insulation is degraded. The high humidity we've experienced recently accelerates this problem. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach yourself, as disturbing it can release a larger cloud of spores.

A professional inspection is the necessary next step. The process involves both a visual assessment of the entire AC system and, critically, air and surface sampling to be analyzed by an accredited microbiology lab. This identifies the species present and determines the correct remediation protocol. For a case with clear growth and health symptoms, this lab analysis is essential. Once the system is properly cleaned and treated by a certified provider, you should see a measurable improvement in your indoor air quality and a reduction in those symptoms.
