Is black mold in bathroom a DIY or urgent issue?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a small patch of black mold starting to grow in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling in our Marina apartment. The AC is always on, but the bathroom ventilation isn't great. Should I treat this as a weekend DIY project, or is it something I need to get the building management involved with urgently?

A small patch of black mould at the shower-ceiling junction is common in Dubai due to the high humidity and condensation from constant AC use. For an area smaller than one square foot, a careful DIY approach is often sufficient.

The key is to address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet surfaces. For the mould itself, wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water; avoid bleach as it only discolours the surface and doesn't kill the roots. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry.

However, if the mould returns quickly, spreads, covers an area larger than a square foot, or if you notice a persistent musty smell, it indicates a deeper issue. This could be a hidden leak within the ceiling or wall cavity from a neighbouring apartment's plumbing, which is a common issue in multi-unit buildings. In such cases, DIY is ineffective and you should notify building management immediately, as they are responsible for the structural integrity and common plumbing. A professional inspection with moisture meters can pinpoint hidden leaks that need urgent remediation to prevent structural damage and health concerns.
