Is black mold in bathroom dangerous for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual, and I’ve just spotted a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower door meets the tiles in our Jumeirah apartment. It’s been so humid the last few weeks that the bathroom never seems to fully dry out, and I’m really worried about their health. What’s the best way to deal with this quickly and safely, especially with young children in the house?

Yes, the presence of black mold (often Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger) in your bathroom is a significant health concern, especially for young children. Their developing respiratory systems are more vulnerable to mycotoxins and spores released by mold. The coughing you've observed is a classic symptom of exposure, which can also include allergic reactions, wheezing, and eye or skin irritation.

The climate in Dubai, characterized by extreme humidity and year-round AC use, creates a perfect storm for mold growth. The AC's cool surfaces can cause significant condensation when met with humid air, particularly in poorly ventilated bathrooms. This persistent moisture allows mold to thrive behind tiles, under grout, and in cavities, often making the visible patch just a small indication of a larger problem.

For a small, surface-level patch (less than 10 sq. ft.), you can carefully clean it with a solution of white vinegar or a proprietary mold remover, wearing an N95 mask and gloves. Ensure the room is well-ventilated and keep children away during and for several hours after the process.

However, given that the mold is at a junction point (shower door and tiles), there is a high probability of hidden growth within the wall or sub-floor. Disturbing it incorrectly can aerosolize a massive amount of spores, drastically increasing exposure. For the safety of your family and to ensure complete remediation, a professional inspection is strongly advised. We use borescopes and moisture meters to assess the full extent of the contamination behind walls.

Saniservice's certified technicians are trained in Dubai's specific conditions and follow strict protocols for containment and removal to prevent cross-contamination. We can also provide solutions to improve ventilation and control humidity to prevent recurrence.
