Is black mold in bedroom a DIY job or professional?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that's been growing in the corner of our master bedroom closet in Jumeirah. It started as a small patch after that really humid spell a couple of months ago, but now it's spreading up the wall and the musty smell is getting stronger. I'm worried about their health but also don't want to call in a professional if it's something I can safely handle myself with bleach or something from Ace Hardware. Is this a DIY job or do I definitely need to get a professional mold remediation company involved?

Black mold in a bedroom, especially with a musty smell and spreading growth, is a health concern that typically requires professional assessment. Given the symptoms your children are experiencing, a DIY approach is not recommended.

The humid climate in Dubai, particularly in coastal areas like Jumeirah, creates ideal conditions for mold to thrive inside walls, not just on the surface. Bleach or store-bought sprays only address the visible patch and can push spores deeper into the porous building materials, often making the problem worse. The key risk is what you cannot see growing behind the drywall or under the flooring.

For a recurring issue of this nature, a professional inspection is advised to identify the moisture source—often condensation from an AC unit, a plumbing leak, or water ingress from a poorly sealed window. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the full extent. Remediation involves containing the area, removing affected materials safely, and addressing the root cause to prevent immediate return.

Since your children are already showing respiratory symptoms, identifying the mold species through lab testing can be crucial for peace of mind and proper remediation guidance. For any visible patch larger than one square meter, or any size where health symptoms are present, professional intervention is the standard recommendation to ensure it is resolved safely and completely.
