Is black mold in bedroom an emergency to fix?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Arabian Ranches. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading quickly but I don't know who to call or how urgent this really is. Should I be treating this as an emergency and calling someone tonight, or is it okay to wait a few days to get a proper inspection?

Black mold in a bedroom, especially in a villa in a humid area like Arabian Ranches, should be treated with urgency but is not typically a middle-of-the-night emergency. The immediate health risk for most healthy adults is irritation—worsened allergies, congestion, or coughing. The risk is higher for infants, elderly, or those with asthma or compromised immune systems.

Given its location on an exterior wall, this is a strong indicator of a condensation issue or a hidden water leak from recent rains or a pipe. The high humidity accelerates its growth. Your priority should be to stop the moisture source.

For now, isolate the area. Avoid disturbing the mold (do not scrub it) as this can release spores. Move clothing away and consider using a dehumidifier in the room. Do not attempt to bleach it, as this often only bleaches the colour and leaves the root structure intact, and can push moisture deeper into the wall.

Schedule a professional inspection within the next few days. A proper assessment will use a moisture meter to find the water source and possibly an infrared camera to see the extent inside the wall cavity. In the UAE, remediation should follow standards like the IICRC S520 to ensure it’s removed correctly, not just surface-cleaned. The company should provide a detailed scope of work and post-remediation verification, often from a third-party, to confirm the environment has been returned to a normal fungal ecology. This diagnostic approach is critical in our climate to prevent rapid recurrence.
