Is black mold in bedroom closet a DIY job?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's gotten worse since last week's heavy dew. I'm worried it's affecting our air quality. What's the best way to handle this safely, and should I call a professional or is this a DIY job?

This is likely a condensation issue, not a DIY job for proper resolution. The wall facing outside is a classic cold spot in Dubai's climate, where the temperature differential between the air-conditioned interior and the hot, humid exterior causes moisture to condense inside the wall cavity. You can wipe the visible patch with a diluted vinegar solution (1 part vinegar to 4 parts water) to address the surface growth, but this is a temporary measure.

The critical step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In many villas and apartments here, this requires a professional inspection to assess potential insulation flaws or hidden water ingress within the wall. DIY attempts often miss the root cause, leading to rapid regrowth. For a closet storing fabrics, the risk of spores contaminating your belongings is also high.

Given the location on an exterior wall and the progression you’ve described, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. They use moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the exact condensation point behind the wall. Remediation typically involves improving ventilation, addressing insulation, and treating the affected area correctly to prevent recurrence, which is common in our high-humidity environment.
