Is black mold in bedroom closet an emergency?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold, about the size of a dinner plate, in the corner of our master bedroom closet where the outer wall is. It’s been so humid lately and I’m worried it’s spreading quickly. Is this something I need to get my landlord to deal with as an emergency this week, or can it wait until the weekend?

Based on the description you've provided—a black mold colony approximately the size of a dinner plate on an exterior wall—this situation requires prompt professional attention and should be escalated to your landlord immediately. In the UAE's high-humidity climate, especially during summer months, mold can proliferate rapidly behind walls and within building materials, often indicating a more significant hidden moisture issue, such as a condensation problem from AC ductwork, a leaking pipe, or a breach in the building envelope.

Under Dubai's rental laws (Law No. 26 of 2007), landlords are obligated to provide a habitable property and are typically responsible for addressing structural or maintenance-related issues that lead to mold, such as faulty waterproofing or leaking AC systems. You should formally notify your landlord in writing, detailing the issue and requesting urgent remediation. While it may not constitute a fire-department-level emergency, waiting until the weekend could allow for further spread and potential health impacts, particularly in a bedroom where you spend significant time.

We strongly advise against attempting to clean this yourself. Disturbing a colony of that size can aerosolize spores, leading to widespread contamination and potential health effects. A professional inspection is critical to identify the precise moisture source, assess the extent of the infestation (which is often larger than what is visible), and execute a safe, effective remediation protocol.
