Is black mold in bedroom closet urgent to clean?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we keep our shoes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside of the building, and with this recent humidity, it seems to have gotten a bit bigger. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on the description of a black mold patch on an exterior wall that is actively growing due to the recent high humidity, this situation should be addressed with a high degree of urgency. In Dubai's climate, where high outdoor humidity combines with the constant cooling of air conditioning, condensation on cold exterior walls is a primary cause of mold growth. This indicates a persistent moisture issue that will not resolve itself.

While a small patch might seem manageable, self-remediation with bleach is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and concrete, as it only bleaches the surface mold without addressing the roots (hyphae) growing within the material. Furthermore, improper cleaning can aerosolize spores, spreading the contamination to other areas of your home.

A professional inspection is critical here. The visible mold is likely just the tip of the iceberg; moisture meters and thermal imaging are needed to determine the full extent of the infestation within the wall cavity and to identify the precise source of moisture, which could be a minor leak or, more commonly, severe condensation.

For a proper and permanent resolution, we recommend contacting our specialists at Saniservice. Our certified professionals can conduct a thorough assessment in line with UAE environmental standards, contain the area to prevent cross-contamination, safely remediate the mold using EPA-approved biocides, and identify the moisture source to prevent recurrence.
