Is black mold in bedroom dangerous and need professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. Since the weather got humid a few weeks ago, both my husband and I have had this persistent stuffy nose and itchy eyes that won't go away. I'm really worried it's connected. How dangerous is this type of mold and should we get a professional to test it, or can we clean it ourselves?

Black mold in a bedroom, especially on an exterior wall, is a significant health and structural concern in Dubai's climate. The persistent humidity we experience creates ideal conditions for mold growth, and the symptoms you're both experiencing—stuffy nose and itchy eyes—are classic indicators of mold exposure. While not all black molds are the highly toxic Stachybotrys, many species can cause these allergic reactions and respiratory irritation.
Given its location on an exterior wall, the issue is likely more than surface moisture; it probably indicates a hidden problem like condensation within the wall cavity or a minor leak from the building envelope. Simply wiping the visible patch won't address the root cause, and it will almost certainly return. Disturbing it without proper containment can also aerosolize spores, spreading them and potentially worsening your symptoms. For a situation like this, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will identify the moisture source, assess the extent of the hidden growth, and provide a protocol for safe remediation. In the UAE, look for providers who follow IICRC S520 standards for mold remediation. They should use moisture meters and thermal imaging to see inside the walls and will typically recommend lab analysis of a tape-lift sample to identify the species, which confirms the health risk and guides the cleanup method. While costly, this approach is the only way to ensure it is resolved permanently. In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room and keep the closet doors open to reduce humidity. |
