Is black mold in bedroom urgent for building management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It’s been really humid the last few weeks and that wall faces the outside. My wife has been waking up with a stuffy nose and I'm worried it's connected. How urgent is it that we get a professional mold remediation company out here, and is this something our building management in Jumeirah Village Circle should handle?

Black mold in a bedroom is a health concern that warrants immediate attention, but whether it's urgent for building management depends on the source. In Dubai's climate, high humidity and condensation on cold exterior walls are frequent causes. Since you mentioned the wall faces outside, this suggests a potential building envelope issue, like a small leak or inadequate insulation, which is typically the building management's responsibility to address.

You should report it to your JVC building management immediately and document the communication. They are obligated under Dubai Municipality regulations to investigate and repair structural defects that cause moisture intrusion. However, for the mold itself, remediation is often the resident's responsibility unless the leak is active and originating from a common area. The urgency for a professional is high if the patch is larger than one square meter, if there's a musty odor, or if symptoms like your wife's stuffy nose persist. These can indicate active growth and spore circulation, possibly through your AC system.

Before moving any boxes, consider a professional inspection to identify the mold type and the moisture source. They can provide a report that strengthens your case with building management. In the meantime, improve ventilation in the room and keep the AC running to help control humidity levels. Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can aggravate spores without addressing the root moisture problem.
