Is black mold in bedroom urgent health risk?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the mold in our master bedroom closet. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a big black patch on the back wall, probably from the recent humidity. We sleep right next to it every night. How urgent is it to get this professionally cleaned, and is it a health risk for us to stay in the room while we wait for a treatment?

Based on the symptoms you describe, this situation should be considered an urgent health risk. The persistent coughing in your children is a significant indicator of exposure to mold spores, which are known respiratory irritants and allergens. The presence of a large black patch in a closet adjacent to your sleeping area means your family is being exposed to elevated spore concentrations for 6-8 hours every night.

In the UAE's climate, this is a common yet serious issue. Our year-round reliance on air conditioning creates significant temperature differentials between cold rooms and warmer walls, leading to condensation—the primary catalyst for mold growth. A closet against an exterior wall is a classic trouble spot. The mold you see is likely the fruiting body of a larger colony that may have proliferated within the wall cavity itself.

It is not advisable to remain in the room. Continuous exposure can exacerbate respiratory issues, leading to more severe allergic reactions or potentially developing into sinus infections or bronchitis, especially in children. Disturbing the mold by attempting to clean it yourself will aerosolize the spores, drastically increasing airborne concentrations and the associated health risk.

This requires immediate professional assessment and remediation. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify the exact moisture source and extent of the infestation, which is almost always greater than what is visible. Remediation involves containment of the area, professional-grade HEPA filtration to capture spores, and the safe removal of contaminated materials, followed by antimicrobial application.

For a situation involving child health, I recommend acting without delay. Please contact our team for an immediate inspection at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or hello@saniservice.com. We can assess the risk and implement a solution to safeguard your family's health.
