Is black mold in closet a DIY or professional job?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some boxes. It's on the wall and I'm worried it might be because of the AC unit. My husband thinks we can just scrub it with bleach, but I'm not so sure with the humidity here. Should we call a professional mold remediation company or is this a safe DIY job?

Based on your description, this is a classic scenario we see in Dubai, and I would strongly advise against a DIY bleach scrub. The UAE's high humidity, especially with an AC unit involved, makes this a more complex issue than it appears.

Black mold (Stachybotrys chartarum) is a serious health risk, and bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall. It only bleaches the surface color while the fungal roots (hyphae) remain deep within the material. More importantly, disturbing it without proper containment and HEPA filtration will aerosolize toxic spores throughout your bedroom, worsening air quality and potential health effects.

The critical factor is the suspected AC link. This indicates a moisture source that must be identified and corrected—this is where professional inspection is non-negotiable. Our certified inspectors use thermal imaging cameras and moisture meters to pinpoint the exact cause, whether it's a leaking duct, condensation buildup, or a breach in the building envelope. UAE regulations, particularly from Dubai Municipality, have strict guidelines for addressing indoor environmental contaminants to protect occupant health.

For a confirmed moisture source and visible growth, professional remediation is the only safe option. We use engineering controls like negative air pressure chambers, industrial HEPA scrubbers, and specialized antimicrobial agents to properly remove the contamination.

Given the potential health risks and the high likelihood of an underlying AC or condensation issue, a professional assessment is essential.
