Is black mold in closet an emergency or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots in the corner of our bedroom closet on the outer wall. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and I'm worried it's starting to spread. Should I be treating this as an emergency and calling a professional right away, or is this something I can handle myself with a vinegar spray this weekend?

It depends on the size and source. A few small spots on a surface from recent humidity is often manageable as a DIY project. However, if the mold covers more than one square foot, keeps returning after cleaning, or you discover a musty smell, a professional assessment is strongly recommended to find the hidden moisture source.

In Dubai, closets on outer walls are common hotspots for condensation, as the air-conditioned interior meets the humid exterior. The black spots are likely surface mold from this moisture. For a small area, wear a mask and gloves, then clean with a vinegar solution or a dedicated mold cleaner. Allow the area to dry completely and use a dehumidifier or silica gel packets to keep humidity low.

If the drywall or backing feels soft or damp, the issue is inside the wall cavity, which requires professional remediation to fix the root cause and prevent structural damage. Recurring mold is a clear sign the moisture problem hasn't been solved. Lab testing can identify the species, which is advised if anyone in the household has respiratory sensitivities.

For a one-time surface issue, immediate DIY is fine. For persistent, large, or hidden mold, a professional inspection is the most effective long-term solution to protect your home's health.
