Is black mold in closet urgent? Bigger issue?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some shoes. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and it feels a bit damp. With how humid it's been lately, I'm worried it's spreading quickly. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, and could it be a sign of a bigger issue with the building?

Black mold in a closet on an exterior wall is a definite red flag, especially given Dubai's high humidity. The dampness you feel suggests an ongoing moisture issue, not just a one-time spill. This is urgent to address because it indicates active growth, and the enclosed space allows spores to concentrate.
The primary concern is the moisture source. In our climate, this is often condensation from an AC supply line running inside the wall or a minor, hidden leak from a pipe or the building envelope. It could also be exacerbated by storing items like shoes, which trap humidity, against the cold exterior wall. The mold itself is a symptom of the bigger issue. For a patch larger than a square foot, or any size with that damp feeling, a professional inspection is recommended. They will use a moisture meter to pinpoint the source behind the wall. Simply wiping it away is a temporary fix; the mold will return within weeks if the moisture isn't resolved. Until you can get it assessed, improve airflow by moving items away from the wall and running a dehumidifier or your AC continuously to lower the room's humidity. A professional can conduct targeted air and surface sampling to identify the mold species and the extent of the problem, which is crucial for effective remediation. |
