Is black mold in closet urgent to fix myself?« Back to Previous Page
|
My bedroom closet on the outside wall has developed a few small patches of black mold, and I just noticed it yesterday when I was putting away clothes. We’ve had so much humidity lately that I guess the moisture built up. I’m worried it might spread quickly in this weather. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a store-bought spray?

Black mold in a closet is moderately urgent and should be addressed within days, not weeks. The high humidity in Dubai provides an ideal environment for it to spread quickly, especially on that outside wall which is likely cooler due to AC, creating condensation.
For a few small patches, you can handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Use a dedicated mold cleaner, not bleach, as bleach only removes the surface color and does not kill the roots. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry. Improve airflow in the closet and consider using a moisture absorber. However, if the mold covers more than a square meter, keeps returning after cleaning, or you notice a musty smell permeating your clothes, it indicates a deeper issue. In these cases, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the moisture source—which could be a small leak in the wall or inadequate insulation—and to perform remediation that prevents regrowth. We use lab testing to confirm the mold type and verify the cleanup's effectiveness, which is crucial for peace of mind in our climate. |
