Is black mold in closet urgent with toddler nearby?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the outer wall. It wasn't there during the summer, but since the weather got more humid a few weeks ago, it's appeared and seems to be slowly spreading. With my toddler sleeping in the next room, I'm getting really worried. Is this something I need to get professionally treated immediately, or can it wait a few weeks until our building's scheduled maintenance comes through?

The presence of black mold, especially with a toddler in close proximity, should be treated as an urgent matter. The Dubai climate, characterized by high humidity and the constant use of air conditioning, creates ideal conditions for mold growth through condensation, particularly on outer walls which can experience thermal bridging. Given its location on an exterior wall and its recent appearance coinciding with increased humidity, this suggests an underlying moisture issue that must be addressed.

While the visible patch may seem small, mold colonies can spread their roots (hyphae) deep into building materials like drywall and release microscopic spores into the air. Toddlers are particularly vulnerable to these spores, which can exacerbate or trigger respiratory issues like asthma and allergies. Immediate action is warranted to protect your family's health.

We strongly recommend a professional inspection. DIY attempts often disturb the colony, causing a significant release of spores. A certified inspector will conduct a thorough assessment to identify the moisture source, assess the extent of the infestation—including inside the wall cavity—and perform air quality testing to determine the spore count in your bedroom. This data is crucial for an effective remediation plan, which must follow strict UAE hygiene and environmental standards.
