Is black mold in Dubai bedroom urgent or DIY?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black and green mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it’s been worse since the humidity spiked last week. My husband thinks it’s not a big deal, but I’m worried. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated here in Dubai, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Mold in a Dubai bedroom is a health and property concern that should be addressed promptly. The urgency depends on the extent and type, but its location on an exterior wall during a humid spell points directly to a condensation issue, which will recur unless the source is fixed.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself. However, bleach is not recommended; it is mostly water and can feed the mold roots inside porous materials like drywall. Use a dedicated fungicidal cleaner or a solution of distilled white vinegar. Scrub the area, let it dry completely, and monitor it. Crucially, identify the cause. The exterior wall is likely a "cold bridge," where the air conditioning cools the wall interior, causing humid air to condense on its surface. Improving ventilation in the closet and ensuring the AC is not set excessively cold can help reduce recurrence.

If the patch is larger, has returned after cleaning, or if anyone in the household experiences persistent allergies, headaches, or respiratory irritation, a professional inspection is advised. They can identify the exact species and, more importantly, use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the precise condensation source within the wall. Remediation often involves correcting insulation issues, which is not a DIY task. In Dubai's climate, ignoring it often leads to the problem spreading inside the wall cavity, where it is invisible and can cause significant damage.
