Is black mold in Dubai dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the last couple of weeks and I just pulled out their winter clothes from the storage cupboard under the stairs. The back wall is covered in black spots and the whole area smells really damp. I'm panicking that this is the cause of their coughs. How dangerous is this mold and what's the fastest way to get it professionally cleaned and checked here in Dubai?

Black mold in a damp storage area is very likely contributing to your kids' persistent coughs. The damp, musty smell indicates active microbial growth, and the spores released into your home's air are a common irritant, especially for children whose respiratory systems are more sensitive. While the term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys, many dark-colored molds can cause similar allergic reactions and respiratory issues.

The Dubai climate is a significant factor. The high humidity, combined with condensation from AC systems and enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces like under-stair cupboards, creates an ideal environment for mold to flourish, even year-round.

For a situation of this visible scale and with clear health symptoms, professional remediation is strongly advised. Do not attempt to clean it yourself with bleach, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores and potentially worsen the problem. The fastest and safest approach is a two-step process.

First, contact a certified mold inspection company to conduct an assessment. They should use moisture meters and may recommend air or surface sampling to be analyzed at an independent microbiology lab. This identifies the species and spore count, which is critical for understanding the health risk and verifying the cleanup was successful.

Second, hire a professional remediation team. They will contain the area with physical barriers and negative air pressure to prevent spores from spreading to the rest of your home, safely remove the contaminated materials, and use industrial-grade HEPA filtration to clean the air. The root cause, which is likely a moisture intrusion or severe condensation, must also be identified and fixed to prevent it from returning immediately.

Until professionals arrive, keep the cupboard door sealed and the area undisturbed. Increase ventilation in your home by running exhaust fans and ensure your AC is maintained with clean filters to help reduce the overall spore load in the air your family is breathing.
