Is black mold in Dubai urgent for my kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black spots I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it, but the wall feels damp and it's spreading near the corner. How urgent is it to get this professionally removed here in Dubai, and can I wait a week for my landlord to send someone?

Yes, it is urgent. The damp wall and spreading growth indicate an active moisture problem, which will worsen the situation. In Dubai's climate, indoor humidity and condensation from AC units often create these conditions behind furniture. The proximity to your bedroom and your children's respiratory symptoms means this should not be delayed.

For your children's health, the coughing is a legitimate concern. While not all black-colored mould is the infamous "toxic black mould" (Stachybotrys), any mould can produce allergens and irritants that trigger coughing, wheezing, and throat irritation, particularly in children. The constant AC use recirculates these spores.

Do not attempt to remove it yourself. Disturbing it will release a large number of spores into your bedroom's air, potentially worsening your kids' symptoms. The critical first step is a professional inspection to identify the mould species and, more importantly, locate and diagnose the moisture source. The leak could be from a pipe, condensation drain, or a breach in the building envelope.

Regarding your landlord, you can inform them immediately. Under Dubai rental regulations, landlords are typically responsible for addressing structural issues causing dampness, like leaking pipes. However, for a health-related concern with children involved, waiting a week is not advisable. The mould will continue to grow. A professional assessment can provide a report detailing the cause and required remediation, which strengthens your request to the landlord and ensures the root problem is fixed, not just the visible mould cleaned.
