Is black mold in Dubai urgent to treat?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on an exterior wall. It wasn't there during my last clean-out a few months ago, but with the recent humidity, it's appeared and seems to be spreading. My husband thinks it's not a big deal, but I'm worried. How urgently do I need to get a professional to look at this in Dubai's climate?

Yes, it is urgent to treat. In Dubai's climate, black mold can spread rapidly due to high humidity and condensation on cooler exterior walls, especially with ACs running constantly. What you're describing—a patch on an exterior wall that appeared and is growing—is a clear sign of an active moisture issue, not just surface dampness.

The urgency is driven by two factors: structural and health. The moisture is likely coming from a small leak in the building envelope or significant condensation, which can worsen over time. Health-wise, while not all black mold is the infamous Stachybotrys, any active colony can release spores that irritate airways, worsen allergies, and cause persistent sinus congestion, particularly in a bedroom.

Do not attempt to clean it with bleach, as this can agitate the spores and only bleaches the colour, leaving the root colony intact. Your first step is to identify and stop the moisture source. A professional inspection is strongly recommended here to use a moisture meter on that wall and assess the extent. They can determine if it's a simple fix or requires remediation to prevent it from returning, which is common if the root cause isn't addressed.
