Is black mold in my AC an emergency?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit for a couple of weeks, but I just pulled the filter out and the entire inside of the unit and the wall behind it are covered in black, fuzzy patches. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy nose and headaches. How urgent is it that I get this professionally cleaned, like should I be calling someone tonight or is it okay to wait a few days?

Based on your description, this is a situation that requires immediate professional attention. The presence of extensive black, fuzzy growth inside the AC unit and on the wall, coupled with your symptoms of a stuffy nose and headaches, strongly indicates a significant mold infestation that is already affecting your health.

In the UAE's climate, where high humidity and constant AC use create ideal conditions for mold, a leaking unit acts as a direct water source, accelerating growth. The types of mold commonly found in such environments, including certain species of Stachybotrys (often referred to as "black mold"), can produce mycotoxins and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that lead to precisely the symptoms you are experiencing. Continuing to sleep in that room and run the contaminated AC unit will only exacerbate your exposure.

We strongly advise against attempting to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and remediation protocols can aerosolize the spores, spreading the contamination throughout your bedroom and HVAC system, making the problem much worse.

You should treat this as an urgent matter. We recommend you call a professional mold inspection and remediation company like Saniservice immediately. Our certified experts can conduct a thorough assessment, including air and surface sampling to identify the species and concentration, and then execute a safe, effective remediation plan following Dubai Municipality guidelines. Do not wait; for your health and the integrity of your property, please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an emergency inspection.
