Is black mold in my AC causing our sickness?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in our master bedroom in Jumeirah Park has been blowing out a really damp, earthy smell for the last month. I’ve been waking up with a stuffy head and a sore throat that goes away after I leave for work, and my husband has developed a nagging cough. I finally took a look inside the vent and saw patches of what looks like black dust around the edges. Is this black mold, and could it be causing our symptoms, or is this just normal Dubai AC dust that I shouldn't worry about?

What you've described is almost certainly a mold issue, and yes, it can be the direct cause of your symptoms. The damp, earthy smell and the fact your symptoms (stuffy head, sore throat, cough) resolve when you leave the room are classic indicators of exposure to mold spores from your AC system. "Dubai AC dust" is typically fine, dry sand; black, patchy dust in a damp vent is a strong visual sign of mold growth.

The constant humidity and condensation inside AC units here create an ideal environment for mold. In a climate where we run AC year-round, any small leak or drainage issue can lead to persistent moisture. The type of mold matters, as some species like Stachybotrys (true "black mold") produce mycotoxins that can cause more severe reactions, but even common types like Aspergillus or Cladosporium can trigger the allergic and irritant symptoms you're experiencing.

For your health and to properly address the source, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use a borescope to look deep inside the ductwork and an air quality test to identify the spore types and concentration levels. In Dubai, remediation companies should follow standards like the NADCA ACR for duct cleaning and IICRC S520 for mold removal. Simply wiping the visible vent isn't enough; the entire system likely needs a certified hygienization to stop the spores from recirculating. Focus on finding a provider who can show you verifiable before-and-after lab results to confirm the issue is resolved.
