Is black mold in my AC dangerous for kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for a few weeks and I suspect it's our bedroom AC unit. I pulled the filter out this morning and the entire plastic casing around it is covered in this black, powdery substance. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and I’m really worried. Is this dangerous black mold and who do I call in Dubai to get it professionally cleaned?

Based on your description, what you are seeing is highly likely to be microbial growth, potentially including Stachybotrys chartarum (often referred to as "black mold") or other toxigenic species. The combination of Dubai's intense humidity and the constant condensation within an AC unit creates a perfect breeding ground. In an older Jumeirah building, aging insulation and potential drainage issues can exacerbate the problem.

This is absolutely a serious health concern, especially for children. As the AC operates, it aerosolizes the mold spores and mycotoxins, blowing them directly into the bedroom air you and your children breathe. This can cause or significantly worsen respiratory issues like the coughing you described, along with allergic reactions, sinus congestion, headaches, and fatigue.

Do not attempt to clean this yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment and HEPA filtration will cause a massive release of spores throughout your home. This is not a surface cleaning job; it requires professional remediation.

The procedure involves isolating the area, using negative air pressure machines, safely removing and disposing of contaminated materials, and employing industrial-grade antimicrobial agents and steam treatment to eradicate the growth at its source. Furthermore, the AC system's drainage and insulation must be inspected and repaired to prevent recurrence.

For a situation like this, you must contact a professional mold inspection and remediation company. I recommend you call Saniservice immediately at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com. They are experts in UAE-specific HVAC contamination and will conduct a thorough inspection, including air quality testing, to identify the exact species and provide a certified remediation protocol to make your home safe again.
