Is black mold in my AC dangerous to breathe?« Back to Previous Page
|
The AC in my apartment seems to be blowing out a really damp, earthy smell, especially when I first turn it on. I just pulled the filter out and the entire plastic housing behind it is covered in a black, fuzzy patch. We've lived in the same Jumeirah villa for 5 years and never had this before, but it's been so humid lately. How urgently do I need to get this professionally cleaned, and is it dangerous for my family to be breathing this in right now?

Black mold in your AC unit is a health concern, particularly for those with allergies, asthma, or weakened immune systems. The damp, earthy smell and visible growth indicate active colonization, which releases spores into your indoor air. Common reactions include persistent coughing, sinus congestion, headaches, and skin irritation.
Given Dubai's high humidity and the fact that your villa's system has been running constantly for years, this is a common but serious issue. The growth inside the plastic housing means the contamination is deep within the system, far beyond what a simple filter change can address. You should arrange a professional inspection and cleaning promptly. Continuing to run the AC will only spread the spores further. A proper remediation involves dismantling the unit to physically remove all biomass, followed by antimicrobial treatment. For verification, a company with its own microbiology lab can take swab samples to confirm the mold type and provide a clearance test after cleaning to ensure it's been resolved. |
