Is black mold in my AC making me sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC vent in my bedroom in our Jumeirah apartment has been blowing out a weird, damp smell for the past couple of months, and lately I've been waking up with a stuffy nose and a sore throat. I just pulled the vent cover off and the inside is covered in black, fuzzy spots. Is this definitely mold, and could it be the reason I've been feeling so unwell every morning?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black, fuzzy substance in your AC vent is mold. The damp smell is a classic indicator of microbial growth, which thrives in the dark, moist environment of air conditioning ducts, a common issue exacerbated by Dubai's high humidity and year-round AC use.

The symptoms you describe—waking up with a stuffy nose and sore throat—are consistent with exposure to mold spores. As the AC operates, it aerosolizes these spores and mycotoxins, distributing them throughout your bedroom where you inhale them for extended periods. This can trigger allergic reactions, respiratory irritation, and other health concerns, particularly in individuals with sensitivities or compromised immune systems.

This is not an issue to be taken lightly. Improper handling can disturb the colony, causing a significant release of spores and contaminating other areas of your apartment. In the UAE, mold remediation is a regulated activity. Professional assessment is critical to determine the full extent of contamination within the ductwork and the air handling unit itself, which you cannot see.

I strongly recommend you cease using the AC in that room immediately and contact a certified professional for a comprehensive inspection and air quality testing. Our team at Saniservice specializes in this exact scenario. We utilize industry-standard protocols and EPA-registered antimicrobials to safely and effectively remediate the mold at its source and hygienize your entire AC system.
