Is black mold in my AC making us sick?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah seems to be blowing out a weird, damp odor, and we’ve all had persistent headaches and sore throats for the last month. I just pulled the filter out and the inside of the unit has these black, fuzzy patches all over it. Is this black mold and could it be making my family sick?

Based on your description, it is highly probable that the black, fuzzy growth in your AC unit is indeed mold, and it is very likely the source of your family's health symptoms. The persistent headaches and sore throats are classic indicators of exposure to microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs) and mycotoxins released by actively colonizing mold, particularly in a confined space like an apartment with recirculated air.

The climate in Dubai creates a perfect environment for this issue. The extreme outdoor humidity, combined with the constant cooling of indoor air, causes significant condensation within the AC system. If the unit's drain line is partially clogged or the drip pan is not draining properly, this standing water becomes a breeding ground for mold. The filter and the cooling coils are the first surfaces to become contaminated. When the blower fan operates, it aerosolizes these spores and fragments, distributing them throughout your living space.

For a confirmed diagnosis and safe remediation, a professional inspection is not just recommended, it is essential. DIY cleaning is strongly discouraged as it can aggravate the colony, causing a massive release of spores. Our certified inspectors use tools like borescopes to inspect the internal ductwork and air sampling to identify the specific mold species and spore count. Remediation involves isolating the HVAC system, using HEPA vacuums and antimicrobial agents to clean the ducts and coil, and addressing the underlying moisture issue.

Given the potential health risks, I advise you to contact a professional team immediately. Please call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com for a comprehensive assessment and a plan to resolve this safely and effectively.
