Is black mold in my bathroom causing my allergies?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest bathroom in our villa in Jumeirah has this dark black mold growing along the base of the wall near the shower. I've been ignoring it for a couple of weeks, but my allergies have been terrible lately and I’m starting to worry it's connected. I know the humidity here can make things worse, but how urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or can I try cleaning it myself first?

That dark black mold in your bathroom is very likely contributing to your allergy symptoms. Mold releases spores and microscopic particles into the air, which are common irritants that cause congestion, sneezing, and itchy eyes, especially in a confined, humid space like a bathroom.

In Dubai's climate, bathrooms are a prime location for mold due to constant high humidity and condensation from hot showers, even with AC running. For a small, surface-level patch, you can attempt to clean it yourself with a dedicated mold remover or a diluted bleach solution, ensuring you wear a mask and gloves and ventilate the area extremely well.

However, given that it's black in colour and has been growing for weeks, it may have penetrated the grout or wall material. If it returns quickly after cleaning or covers an area larger than a square foot, the moisture source is likely behind the wall. In these cases, a professional inspection is urgent to identify the extent of the growth and the root cause, such as a hidden leak or insufficient ventilation, which is critical for a permanent solution. Professional remediation also ensures it is contained and removed without spreading spores throughout your villa.
