Is black mold in my bathroom dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it’s from the black mold growing in the corners of our bathroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it spreading behind the toilet and up the wall after this year's extra-humid summer. I’m getting headaches every time I shower. Is this level of mold dangerous, and should I get a professional to clean it or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Based on my professional experience as a certified mold inspector in the UAE, the presence of black mold (often Stachybotrys chartarum or Aspergillus niger) in your bathroom is a significant health and structural concern. The symptoms you describe—coughing in children and persistent headaches—are classic indicators of mold spore exposure, which can exacerbate asthma and cause allergic reactions.

The Dubai climate is a primary catalyst. The extreme summer humidity, combined with condensation from hot showers and year-round air conditioning creating thermal bridges, provides the perfect environment for mold to thrive behind walls and in concealed spaces. The fact it's spreading indicates an active moisture source, likely beyond surface condensation, possibly from a hidden pipe leak or insufficient waterproofing, which is a common issue in older buildings.

While small, surface-level mold on non-porous tiles can sometimes be addressed with a hydrogen peroxide solution (bleach is not recommended as it only bleaches the surface and does not kill the roots), your case requires professional attention. The spread behind the toilet and up the wall suggests a deeper infestation. Disturbing it yourself risks aerosolizing a high concentration of toxic spores throughout your home, worsening your family's exposure.

UAE regulations, particularly Dubai Municipality's public health and safety codes, emphasize the importance of maintaining a hygienic living environment free from such biological contaminants. A professional assessment is critical to identify the root moisture cause, assess the extent of contamination, and execute a safe, compliant remediation protocol.

For the health of your family and to properly address the source, I strongly recommend a certified inspection. Contact our specialists at Saniservice for a comprehensive assessment. Call 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
