Is black mold in my bathroom making my kids sick?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's from the black mold that’s grown along the grout in our master bathroom shower. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it spreading behind the toilet, probably because the bathroom doesn't get much ventilation. How urgently do I need to get a professional to handle this, or is it something I can treat myself with a cleaner from Ace Hardware?

Based on your description, the situation warrants immediate professional attention. The presence of black mold, especially with accompanying health symptoms like persistent coughing in children, is a significant concern. The species often found in damp bathrooms, such as Stachybotrys chartarum (commonly called "black mold"), can produce mycotoxins that are particularly irritating to the respiratory system, especially in young children whose immune systems are still developing.

The UAE's high humidity, combined with year-round AC use, creates a perfect environment for mold proliferation. AC units can often spread mold spores throughout the living space if not properly maintained. The lack of ventilation you mentioned is a critical factor accelerating this growth.

While surface cleaners from a hardware store can remove visible discoloration, they are a temporary and often insufficient solution. They do not address the root cause—the moisture problem—nor do they eradicate the microscopic spores that have likely become airborne and embedded within porous surfaces like grout and drywall. Improper DIY cleaning can actually aerosolize these spores, worsening indoor air quality and potentially exacerbating your children's symptoms.

For a situation involving health effects and recurring growth, a professional inspection is strongly advised. Our certified inspectors at Saniservice use tools like moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to identify hidden moisture sources and air sampling to determine spore concentration levels. This allows for a targeted and complete remediation plan, following UAE environmental and health guidelines, to ensure the mold is removed safely and the moisture issue is resolved to prevent recurrence.

Given the health impacts on your children, I recommend acting promptly. Please call us at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com to schedule an inspection.
