Is black mold in my bedroom wall urgent?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind some storage boxes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it's been really humid lately in our Jumeirah villa. I'm worried it might be spreading inside the wall. How urgent is it to get this professionally treated, or can I handle it myself with a spray from the supermarket?

Black mold on a bedroom wall in a Jumeirah villa is a concern that should be addressed promptly. Given its location on an exterior wall during a humid period, this strongly suggests a condensation issue or a potential hidden leak, which is common with Dubai's climate. The fact it was hidden behind boxes indicates it has likely been growing for some time.
For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt to clean it yourself with a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, not just bleach. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles. Scrub the area thoroughly and ensure it is completely dry. However, this only addresses the surface. The critical issue is the moisture source. If it's inside the wall cavity, the problem is almost certainly more extensive than what is visible. Given the description, a professional inspection is highly recommended. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall cavity's condition. This is urgent because prolonged moisture can compromise structural integrity and lead to a significant mold colony out of sight. In the UAE, sustained indoor humidity above 60% provides the perfect environment for this spread. The goal is to identify and fix the moisture source—be it thermal bridging, a leak, or inadequate ventilation—before remediation. Simply cleaning the surface will result in it returning. A reputable inspector will provide a verified moisture reading and a clear scope of the problem before any work begins. |
