Is black mold in my closet a DIY or professional job?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which shares a wall with the bathroom. The AC in my apartment seems to be constantly running but the room still feels damp, and my husband has been waking up with a stuffy nose. Is this something I can handle myself with bleach from Ace Hardware, or is it a job for a professional? And if so, what's the ballpark cost to get it properly treated in a one-bedroom apartment in Jumeirah?

Based on your description of a recurring issue in a damp-feeling room with existing health symptoms, this is unequivocally a job for a professional, not a DIY project. Using bleach from a hardware store is strongly discouraged. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall and wood, as it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root system intact. More critically, it can agitate the spores, releasing them into the air and potentially worsening your husband's respiratory symptoms.

The conditions you describe are classic for Dubai: the constant AC operation can create significant condensation if the unit is not properly balanced for the humidity load, especially in a closet sharing a wall with a bathroom. This persistent moisture source means the mold will continue to return even if you superficially clean it. The black discoloration is likely Stachybotrys chartarum or another toxigenic species, which requires expert handling.

A professional inspection is critical. We would conduct a thorough assessment to identify the exact moisture source (e.g., a plumbing leak, thermal bridging, or AC condensate issue), perform air and surface sampling to determine the species and spore count, and develop a targeted remediation plan. This involves containment, HEPA filtration, and specialized antimicrobials, not bleach.

For a one-bedroom apartment in Jumeirah, the cost for a full inspection, report, and professional remediation of a contained area like a closet typically ranges from AED 1,500 to AED 3,500, depending on the extent of the infestation and the required corrective actions for the moisture source.

Given your husband's reaction, I recommend you cease use of the closet and contact a certified professional immediately. For a proper assessment and quote, please call Saniservice at 800-MOLDS (800-66537) or email hello@saniservice.com.
