Is black mold in my closet dangerous for my toddler?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, behind the clothes. I'm really worried because my three-year-old has had a persistent cough for the last few weeks and we can't figure out why. This is in an older building in Deira and I know the closet shares a wall with the bathroom. What is the safest and most effective way to get this professionally cleaned, and how do I make sure it's completely gone for my family's health?

Yes, black mold in a closet is a significant concern, especially for a toddler with a developing respiratory system. The persistent cough you're describing is a classic symptom of mold exposure. The type you're describing, likely Stachybotrys chartarum (the common "black mold"), produces mycotoxins that can be particularly problematic, causing allergic reactions, respiratory issues, and worsening asthma.

Given the location—an older building in Deira sharing a wall with a bathroom—the primary cause is almost certainly a hidden moisture issue. This could be a leaking pipe within the wall, condensation from the bathroom's humidity, or a breach in the waterproofing. Simply wiping the visible patch is a temporary fix; the root cause must be addressed.

For your family's safety, particularly your toddler, a professional inspection is non-negotiable. DIY methods can aerosolize the spores, spreading them throughout your home and exacerbating the health risks. Our certified inspectors use moisture meters, thermal imaging cameras, and air quality tests to pinpoint the exact moisture source and determine the full extent of the contamination, even inside the walls.

The remediation process we follow is strict: the area is sealed with containment barriers, air scrubbers with HEPA filtration run continuously to purify the air, and the mold is safely removed. All affected materials are disposed of, and the area is treated with antimicrobial solutions. Finally, we will identify and help rectify the moisture source to prevent recurrence.
