Is black mold in my Dubai closet a DIY job?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, right against the outside wall. It's been getting worse since the humidity spiked a few weeks ago. I'm really worried about it spreading to our clothes and causing health issues. What's the most effective way to remove this safely, and should I hire a professional company here in Dubai or is it a DIY job?

The black mold in your closet is likely due to condensation forming on that exterior wall, a very common issue in Dubai's climate where high outdoor humidity meets cold AC-cooled surfaces. For a patch smaller than one square meter, you can attempt DIY removal.

Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and safety glasses. Isolate the area by closing the closet door and placing a towel at the bottom. Scrub the affected surface with a mixture of detergent and water, or a vinegar solution. Avoid bleach, as it only removes the surface color and does not address the moisture source. After cleaning, the area must be dried completely with a fan to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, the critical step is identifying and rectifying the moisture source. This is often inadequate insulation in the external wall or an AC unit causing extreme temperature differentials. DIY solutions often fail because they only treat the visible growth, not the root cause.

For any recurring mold, a patch larger than one square meter, or if you have respiratory sensitivities, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. Reputable firms use moisture meters and thermal imaging to pinpoint the exact condensation source hidden within the wall structure. They then perform remediation under containment to prevent spores from spreading to other areas of your home, followed by post-remediation verification to confirm the environment is dry and spore counts have returned to normal levels. This diagnostic approach is what differentiates a lasting solution from a temporary fix.
