Is black mold in my Dubai rental a health emergency?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a large patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, hidden behind some storage boxes. It must have been growing for a while because the dampness has even seeped into the wall and our winter clothes stored there smell terrible. I'm worried this is a health risk for our family, especially with our toddler sleeping in the next room. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold removal company involved here in Dubai, and is this something my landlord is legally required to fix?

Black mold in a Dubai rental, especially of this size and with a musty odor, requires immediate attention. The combination of high humidity and air-conditioned interiors creates ideal conditions for mold, and hidden growth like this often indicates a persistent moisture issue, likely a leak from plumbing or the AC unit.

For a toddler's health, this is a significant concern. While not every black mold is the infamous Stachybotrys, prolonged exposure to any mold can aggravate respiratory issues, trigger allergies, and cause persistent coughing or congestion. The musty smell on your clothes confirms active microbial growth.

Legally, your landlord is responsible for fixing the source of the moisture under Dubai's rental laws, as it constitutes a defect that affects the property's habitability. You should formally notify them in writing with photos. However, the urgency for your family's health may mean you need to act first and seek reimbursement.

This is not a DIY job. Disturbing the mold without proper containment will release a massive amount of spores throughout your home. A professional inspection is critical to identify the exact moisture source and the mold species. Remediation involves isolating the area, removing contaminated materials like drywall, HEPA vacuuming, and antimicrobial treatment to prevent regrowth. Given the extent you've described, involving a certified remediation company is strongly advised to ensure it's resolved safely and completely.
