Is black mold in my Dubai villa dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night for the past two weeks and I’ve just found patches of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet, behind all the clothes. It’s an internal wall in our villa in Jumeirah and the room always feels a bit damp. Is this dangerous and what’s the best way to get it professionally removed here without it just coming back?

The black mold you've described is a significant health and structural concern, especially in Dubai's climate. The persistent high humidity and year-round air conditioning create ideal conditions for mold growth, as AC units can cause condensation on cold internal walls if not properly balanced. This leads to the dampness you've noticed.

The type of mold is critical. While the term "black mold" often refers to Stachybotrys chartarum, which can produce mycotoxins linked to respiratory issues, chronic coughing, and fatigue, only professional testing can confirm the species. Its location behind clothes in a closet indicates a persistent moisture issue, likely from condensation within the wall cavity or a minor, hidden plumbing leak.

For your children's safety, immediate action is required. Do not attempt to remove it yourself, as improper handling can aerosolize spores and exacerbate the problem. The remediation process must address both the visible growth and the underlying moisture source to prevent recurrence, in line with UAE standards for healthy housing.

A certified professional will conduct a thorough inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, to identify the exact cause. Remediation involves containment of the area, HEPA filtration, safe removal of contaminated materials, and application of EPA-approved antimicrobials. Finally, the root cause—be it inadequate ventilation, thermal bridging, or a leak—must be permanently resolved.
