Is black mold in my house dangerous for my family?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop for the past two weeks and I’m starting to panic. I just pulled out a bunch of winter clothes from the storage cupboard under our stairs in our villa in Jumeirah and found a whole section of the back wall covered in fuzzy black spots that smell damp. Could this be the black mold I keep hearing about and is it dangerous enough that I need to get my family out of the house until it's cleaned?

The black mold you found is a legitimate health concern, especially given your children's symptoms. In Dubai's climate, the high humidity and condensation in enclosed spaces like under-stair cupboards create a perfect environment for mold growth, particularly when AC use can cause temperature differentials that lead to moisture buildup.

While the term "black mold" is often used for Stachybotrys chartarum, many dark-colored molds can produce mycotoxins and allergens. All types found in damp indoor environments can cause respiratory irritation, persistent coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms. Children are often more susceptible to these effects.

You do not necessarily need to evacuate your home immediately, but you should isolate the area. Keep the cupboard door closed and ensure your children do not access it. Increase ventilation in the villa by running exhaust fans and your AC to help reduce overall humidity levels.

For a case of this size and with active health symptoms, professional inspection and remediation are strongly advised. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the mold can release a large number of spores into your home's air. A reputable local company can conduct an assessment, identify the mold species through lab analysis, and safely contain and remove the affected materials following industry standards. They will also identify and address the source of the moisture to prevent it from returning. Request that they provide before-and-after air quality test results to verify the cleanup was effective.
