Is black mold in my kids' room an urgent issue?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past few weeks and I’ve just found patches of black mold in the corner of their bedroom closet where we store their winter clothes. The wall feels a bit damp and I'm worried it's because of how humid it's been, even with the AC running constantly. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, or can I handle it myself with a bleach spray?

Based on my professional experience with mold inspection and remediation in Dubai, the situation you describe is indeed urgent and requires immediate professional attention.

The presence of black mold (likely Stachybotrys chartarum), combined with persistent dampness and your children's respiratory symptoms, is a significant health and safety concern. The constant high humidity in the UAE, even with AC running, creates a perfect environment for mold growth, especially in concealed, poorly ventilated areas like closets. The damp wall indicates a persistent moisture source, which could be condensation from the AC unit, a small leak, or capillary action from the building's exterior.

I strongly advise against using bleach. It is ineffective on porous surfaces like drywall, can exacerbate spore release into the air, and does not address the underlying moisture problem. DIY attempts often worsen indoor air quality and spread contamination.

Under Dubai Municipality regulations, professional remediation is required to safely contain the area, remove contaminated materials like the affected drywall and stored items, and implement engineering controls like HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination. A certified inspection is critical to identify the exact moisture source and the full extent of the infestation, which is often far greater than what is visible.

For the health of your family, I recommend you contact a certified professional immediately. Our team at Saniservice can conduct a comprehensive inspection, including moisture mapping and air quality testing, and execute a safe, guaranteed remediation.
